Muguruza Leads Tech at South Region Championships

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Number nine seed Jose Luis Muguruza advanced to the Round of 32 on Friday at the ITA South Regional Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C. The sophomore will face seventeenth seed Marko Miklo of Virginia in Saturday action.

Muguruza, a native of Wesley Chapel, Fla., received a bye in the first round of the South Regional Championships. In afternoon action, Muguruza defeated Wake Forest’s Andrew Hamar. Muguruza will face Virginia’s Marko Miklo in the Round of 32 on Saturday.

In other action, freshman David North started the day with a straight set win over Derek Schwandt of Richmond. In later action, North fell to Carolina’s Brad Pomeroy in straight sets. Allen Simmons of Furman knocked off Zachary Rath in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (9).

In doubles action, North and Rath teamed up as the number nine seed and took out Emery and Tarr of James Madison University. The duo will continue action on Saturday.
