GREENSBORO, N.C. – Alex Montgomery was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball All-Freshman Team, announced by the league today. Montgomery is the first Yellow Jacket to be named to the freshman team since Chioma Nnamaka was recognized in 2005 and she is only sixth Jacket to be named to the team in the history of the program.
Tech’s super freshman has started 26 of the 28 games she has played this season. She ranks third on the team in scoring with 11.4 points and is second with 5.5 rebounds. She has also registered 58 assists, 47 steals and 23 blocks in her first season on the Flats. She was named ACC Rookie of the Week twice this season.
“Alex is very deserving of being named to the ACC All-Freshman team,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She mean’s a lot to this team on both ends of the floor. She has played three positions for us and has jumped center. To say she is versatile is an understatement. I look forward to watching her develop into one of the best players in the ACC over the next three years.”
Joining Montgomery on this year’s freshman team is North Carolina’s Cetera DeGraffenreid, Virginia Tech’s Andrea Barbour and Boston College’s Stefanie Murphy and Carolyn Swords. Murphy was also named the ACC Rookie of the Year.
The Jackets (21-8) have earned the No. 5 seed in the 2008 ACC Tournament and will open play against No. 12 seed Miami Thursday at 11 a.m.
