Men's Tennis to Face Auburn Sunday

Feb. 21, 2009

ATLANTA – – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team travels to Auburn, Ala., this Sunday for a matchup against No. 30 Auburn at 2 p.m. the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

“We always have good matches against Auburn,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “I respect coach Shore and the Auburn program, and we are really excited to head over there and play them.”

The Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 56 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, are coming off a 7-0 win over Georgia State Thursday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Tech is 3-0 in home matches, but will look to improve on a 1-2 road record Sunday.

The Jackets will look for leadership from sophomore Guillermo Gomez at the No. 1 spot. Gomez, the seventh-ranked singles player in the nation, is 19-4 on the season and 3-1 in dual match play. The Alicante, Spain native, received the highest ranking in school history as the new ITA poll was released Thursday evening.

In doubles play, freshman Kevin King and sophomore Doug Kenny are a team-best 5-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to then-No. 10 Baylor.

Auburn 3-1 on the season, and led by No. 41 Alexey Tysrenov and No. 56 Tim Puetz.

“We should be playing outdoors in conditions similar to the Georgia State match,” Thorne added. “So we will be ready.”
