ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team recorded a strong finish on the final day of play in the Southern Intercollegiate Scramble on Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga., by taking five of seven matches from in-state rival Georgia. The remnants of tropical storm Hannah forced the tournament to move indoors on the Tech campus due to ongoing construction at the indoor courts in Athens, Ga.
The Yellow Jackets opened the day by sweeping a pair of doubles matches from the Bulldogs. Tech’s team of Fabio Campos and Marko Rajevac disposed of Georgia’s tandem of Will Glenn and Stephan Timu by an 8-5 score, while the Jackets’ duo of Scott Schnugg and Joao Menano defeated UGA’s Jason Varela and Trevor Wilson by an 8-2 count.
In singles play, Tech swept the Nos. 3-5 matches from the Bulldogs to close out the day. Joao Menano was the first winner of the day in singles as he defeated Jason Varela at No. 3 in straight sets by scores of 7-5 and 6-2. Fabio Campos followed Menano at No. 4 with a straight-set victory over Will Glenn. Campos captured the first set by a 7-5 score and then rolled in the second set, claiming a 6-3 victory. The final win of the day for the Jackets came at No. 5, as rookie Marko Rajevac picked up his second win of the weekend with a victory over Trevor Wilson in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
The Bulldogs’ Nicolas Boeker downed the Yellow Jackets’ Roger Anderson in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) at No. 1, while Stephan Timu downed Scott Shnugg (7-5, 6-7 (9), 14-12) in a three-set thriller in the day’s other two singles matches.
Georgia Tech will now be off until returning to action on October 8-13 at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., from October 11-13.
