THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (13-14, 4-8 ACC) put up tough fight in the second round of play at the ACC Championships, but ultimately fell to Miami in a 4-2 decision.
After the conclusion of doubles play, Miami held a 1-0 advantage over the Jackets. Tech did earn a doubles win following #45 Andres Martin’s and Keshav Chopra’s 6-2 victory over Miami’s Juan Martin Jalif and Martin Vergara. With this victory, the duo remains undefeated with five-straight wins.
Miami earned the first win in singles play and went up 2-0 against Tech. However, #78 Marcus McDaniel made a stellar comeback against Miami’s Antonio Prat after being down 4-0 in the first set. McDaniel won five straight games to take the first set in a 7-5 decision. The junior continued this feat in the second set, finalizing the match with a 6-3 victory.
#9 Martin also made a comeback, bouncing back from a 4-6 loss to Miami’s #24 Dan Martin in the first set. The junior responded with a dominating 6-0 win in the second, evening the sets at 1-1. In the third and final set, Martin clinched the singles victory with a 6-3 win over the top-25 Miami player.
Following Martin’s win, Tech was only down 2-3 with two more matches left to play. Both #70 Chopra and Elias Shokry were still competing in the third sets of their singles matches.
The final match score ultimately came down to Chopra’s 6-3, 1-6, 4-6 close battle with Miami’s #99 Martin Katz. Prior to the conclusion of the match, Shokry was only down 2-3 against Miami’s Nacho Serra Sanchez.
