Men's Tennis Hangs On To 4-3 Win Over Clemson

Jason Pieters posted a come-from-behind three-set victory at the No. 2 flight of singles over Goran Sterijovski to clinch the match for the No. 39 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team, defeating No. 41 Clemson by a narrow 4-3 margin. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 8-3, 2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference action while the Tigers fall to 14-6, 0-2 in ACC play.

The Yellow Jackets opened the match winning the doubles point as the fifteenth ranked duo of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac withstood three match points and fought back to defeated Jarmaine Jenkins and Nathan Thompson, 9-8 (6) at No. 1 doubles. Tech then earned the point as at No. 2 doubles, Jason Pieters and West Nott teamed together to beat Sterijovski and Ryan Young by a close 8-6 score. In the final doubles match, John Boetsch and Damiisa Robinson disposed of Joao Menano and Zachary Rath, 8-3.

Clemson quickly tied the match a 1-1 as Thompson defeated Schnugg at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3. The Jackets took a 2-1 advantage as Nott beat Boetsch in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. After dropping the first set, Menano rallied to make the score 3-1, defeating Young, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Clemson then received a point at No. 5 as Robinson held on to a 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 win over Rath. At No. 2 singles, the final match of the day, No. 77 Jenkins outlasted No. 78 Jose Muguruza, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday when they host Maryland at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
