Jason Pieters dropped a three set match to Rylan Rizza at No. 2 singles as the No. 19 Virginia Cavaliers defeated the No. 39 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 10-4, 3-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action while the Cavaliers improve to 13-1, 3-0 ACC.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match dropping the doubles point as the No. 17 ranked duo of Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler combined to upset the Jackets’ 15th ranked tandem of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Doug Stewart and Darrin Cohen paired together to defeat Zachary Rath and Joao Menano. Tech’s only victory in doubles came at No. 2 where Jason Pieters and West Nott combined together to beat Marko Miklo and Stephen Rozek in a close match, 9-8 (2).
After dropping the doubles point, Tech could not recover, falling in four singles matches. At No. 1 singles No. 24 Stewart beat Schnugg, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, while Miklo rallied to defeat Nott, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Cohen defeated Menano in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Tech’s two wins on the afternoon came at No. 3 where Jose Luis Muguruza defeated Rozek, 6-4, 7-5 and at No. 5 as Rath beat Meythaler 6-3, 6-4.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday when they travel to face No. 18 Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
