The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team dropped its conference opener of the season, falling to #15 Duke Saturday, 7-0. The Blue Devils improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in ACC play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Duke captured the doubles point with wins at the numbers two and three slots. The No. 15 doubles team of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac upset fourth-ranked Ludovic Walker and Jason Zimmerman, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Jason Pieters and West Nott fell to the No. 12 duo of Philip King and Jonathan Stoke, 8-4. The point came down to the match at number three, where Duke’s Peter Shults and Peter Rodrigues defeated Joao Menano and Zachary Rath in a tie breaker, 9-8 (5).
The Jackets struggled in singles play as the Blue Devils won all six flights. Singles play began with Duke winning at No. 5 as Rajevac lost in straight sets to Stokke, 6-4, 6-0. Schnugg then fell at the No. 1 position to No. 21 King, 6-4, 6-0. The match was clinched for Duke when Menano was defeated at the No. 4 flight, 6-4, 6-2 by Zimmerman. In the final three matches, Christopher Brown defeated Zachary Rath, 6-0. 6-4 at No. 6 while West Nott fell at No. 3 to Rodrigues in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 and Pieters lost at No. 2 to ninth-ranked Walker, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action tomorrow facing Wake Forest at 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem, NC.
