McDowell Named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

March 17, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior Amanda McDowell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Yellow Jackets to an upset win over fourth-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, announced the conference office Tuesday.

Moving back to the No. 1 position, the Atlanta junior blew past No. 31 Kelcy Tefft, 6-2, 6-2, ultimately proving the difference-maker in a 4-3 Georgia Tech win. McDowell has won three straight singles matches.

In doubles, McDowell teamed with freshman Lynn Blau to defeat Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley, 8-5, in the third flight. The Yellow Jacket duo is now 3-0 since being paired together last week.

McDowell is the second Yellow Jacket to earn ACC weekly honors this season. Freshman Irina Falconi was tabbed the Player of the Week on Feb. 24.

Tech returns to action Thursday when it travels to in-state rival Georgia. The match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Jackets will return home next weekend when they host Virginia on Saturday and Virginia Tech on Sunday.
