Jan. 11, 2008

ATLANTA – Whitney McCray posted a pair of three-set singles wins to lead the Georgia Tech women’s tennis contingent on day one of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships, which is being hosted by UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.

All four Yellow Jackets in attendance posted first-round singles wins, including McCray, who knocked off the tournament’s No. 8 seed, 42nd-ranked Laila Abdala of Arizona State, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Also recording a three-set win in the first round was Tech sophomore Kirsten Flower, who stopped the tourney’s No. 5 seed, 28th-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Amanda McDowell and Kristi Miller notched straight-set first round wins, as McDowell stopped UCLA’s Alex McGoodwin, 7-6, 6-1, and Miller downed Arizona State’s Wendy Pilecka, 6-2, 6-1.

The Jackets ran into problems in the second round, as only McCray could muster a win in the late afternoon matches, posting a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over USC’s Sarah Fansler to move to Saturday’s play. Top-seeded McDowell dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 4-6 decision to North Carolina’s Katrina Tsang while Flower and Miller fell in straight sets.

Earlier in the day Miller teamed with Flower to defeat UCLA’s Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore, 8-1, while the doubles tandem of McDowell and McCray fell, 5-8, to Whitney Deason and Jessica Nguyen.

Play will continue at 10 a.m. PT Saturday with the quarterfinals of doubles with two rounds of singles to follow.
