ATLANTA–Chaunte Howard won her fifth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title in the high jump with an ACC-record leap to lead Georgia Tech on day two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Chapel Hill, N.C.
Howard, the junior from Riverside, Calif., won her 19th straight collegiate high jump and set a new ACC record with a mark of 6 feet-2.75 inches.
A U.S. Olympian and two-time NCAA champion in the high jump, Howard also scored with a seventh place finish in the long jump to lead the Tech women to a sixth-place standing after day two with 20 points. The Yellow Jackets are poised for a strong finish Saturday after an outstanding showing by Tech’s sprinters in Friday’s qualifying rounds, led by Dana Rogers and Andriane Lapsley, who each qualified in three events.
Greg McCormick led the men’s team tonight with a school record in the heptathlon with a score of 4,869, finishing in fourth place for the Yellow Jackets.
Lapsley, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, turned in the top qualifying performances in the 60 meters and 200 meters while also advancing in the 60-meter hurdles. Rogers, a senior from Atlanta, also qualified in all three events, including the top mark in the 60-meter hurdles.
Tech women ran four of the top six times in the 60-meter hurdles, led by Rogers’ mark of 8.33 and followed by Fatmata Fofanah (2nd, 8.35), Lapsley (5th, 8.41) and Shantia Moss (6th, 8.41). All four surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard, while Fofanah and Lapsley’s times are personal bests.
The Jackets also had the top two times in the 200 meters from Lapsley (24.15) and sophomore Ashlee Kidd (24.18), while Rogers’ qualified eighth (24.59). Kidd also advanced in the 400 meters with a 55.04 clocking.
In the 60-meters, Lapsley ran 7.44, an NCAA provisional time, while Rogers ran 7.64.
Jennifer Lentz advanced in the 800 meters with the third-best qualifying mark at 2:13.70.
In Friday’s other finals, Tech’s distance medley team of Lentz, Antoinetta McKay, Nisha Kurian and Ann Armsby placed sixth with a time of 11.59.40. In the long jump, Howard (19-6.75) placed seventh, while teammate Brandy Depland (19-4.25)was eighth.
The Miami women lead the competiton with 48 points. In the men’s competition, Clemson leads with 48 points, while the Tech men stand ninth with eight points.
Brian Ford advanced in both the 200 and 400 meters. The senior from Ashland, Va., had the second-best time in the 400 meters (48.79) and the third-fastest mark in the 200 (21.82). Senior Kyle Rabbit placed sixth in the 5000 meters (14.34.91).
In the men’s 60-meter hurdles, senior Montrell Person’s 7.85 clocking was the top qualifying mark and also surpassed the NCAA provisional standard.
Neil McDonagh qualified in the mile run with a 4:14.95 clocking.
