Massey, Wagner & Rhett Were Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

April 26, 2004

ATLANTA-Tech track standouts Michael Massey and Amandi Rhett and pitcher Nick Wagner were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, April 26, 2004.

Massey, a senior from Asheboro, N.C., tied for first place in the men’s high jump at the Penn Relays. He had an NCAA Region qualifying mark of 6’11.75″ in the high jump. His first place jump tied a season and personal best in the high jump.

Wagner, a junior from Springfield, Ohio, made two appearances last week against Winthrop and Florida State to help Georgia Tech to a perfect 4-0 record. Wagner made his first appearance of the week on Tuesday against Winthrop, working two shutout innings – the ninth and 10th – as Tech would win 7-6 in the 13th inning. He allowed just one hit and struck out two. On Sunday, Wagner earned his first save of the season in Tech’s 7-6 win over Florida State to complete the first ever ACC sweep of the Seminoles in Tallahassee. Wagner worked 1.1 shutout innings and struck out two. He entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning and the Yellow Jackets leading 7-6. The Seminoles had two runners on base, but Wagner worked out of the jam by getting a strikeout. After the tying run reached base on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning, Wagner retired the Nos. 3-4-5 hitters in the FSU lineup, including a strikeout of cleanup hitter Gibbs Chapman to end the game. For the week, Wagner worked 3.1 shutout innings and allowed just one hit and one walk. He struck out four, holding opponents to a .083 batting average.

Rhett, a senior from Willingboro, N.J., tallied a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash at the Penn Relays. Her time of 11.59 qualifies her for the upcoming NCAA Regional. She also ran a leg of the 4x200m relay team that finished 10th with a time of 1:35.15.
