ATHENS, Ga. – On the second day of the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, three Georgia Tech divers earned a spot in the finals at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
The night was highlighted by a fifth place finish by Brandon Makinson in the 3-meter dive. The sophomore earned a spot in the finals with an eighth place, 361.30 point finish. In the finals he jumped up a few spots to finish the day with a fifth place, 743.00 point result, helping his cause for a bid to the NCAA Championships.
Also earning a spot in the finals was teammate Chris Khosravi who took 16th during the prelims tallying 332.85 points in the first round. He dropped a couple of spots in the finals to 18th, but finished the night with a point total of 642.10.
In the women’s 1-meter dive, freshman Ashley Hardy earned a spot in her first Zone Diving finals with a 17th place, 255.70 point performance in the preliminary rounds. Hardy moved up a spot after her finals performance total of 516.50 points. Helen Alvey finished just shy of the finals with her 24th place, 240.75 point showing in the prelims.
The top-9 men and women at the zone meet will advance to the finals, but the selections will not be made until the end of the three day competition on Saturday.
The Jackets return to the pool Saturday on the final day of the Championships as the men and the women will both compete off of the platform.
