Brendon Mahoney defeated a strong field to win the 1500 meters, highlighting Georgia Tech’s performance on the first day of the Georgia Tech Invitational track meet, Friday at the Griffin Track.
Mahoney, who had already eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard with a season best time of 3:42.48, ran 3:46.74 Friday in his final NCAA tuneup and defeated post-collegians Dan Wilson (ASIC) and Alan Webb (Nike).
Zeb Sion placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 55 feet-9.25 inches. He also has already qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
In the 5000 meters, Joe Poliseo placed third with a time of 14:59.12, Tech’s best performance in the event this season.
Anthony Hoover placed eighth in the javelin with a season-best throw of 196 feet-10 inches. Former Georgia Tech standout Chris Sinotte was third in the event (224-06).
Jessica DeFreitas placed 10th in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet-7.75 inches.
The Georgia Tech Invitational continues Saturday, with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and running events beginning at 5 p.m. Admission at the Griffin Track is free. Live results are available at www.deltatiming.com.
