CARY, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Carol Lee challenged the nation’s second-ranked player in the opening round of the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday morning at the Cary Tennis Park. The Yellow Jacket faced top-seeded Sarah Hamner of South Carolina.
In a highly competitive first set, No. 16 Lee and No. 2 Hamner were on serve early at 3-2 before Lee earned a break to take a 4-2 lead against the Gamecock. Lee, however, lost her next two service games, reversing the lead and giving Hamner a 5-4 edge. But Hamner’s lead was short-lived as Lee dominated the next game to move back on serve at 5-all. Hamner took the next two games to win the first set, 7-5.
Hamner gained a quick lead to open the second set, jumping out with a 5-1 advantage. Lee held the next game to make it 5-2 and fought off match point in the next game, but Hamner held for the 6-2 win.
Lee returns to action in the consolation bracket on Thursday and will face Tulsa’s Laia Conde Monfort.
