ORLANDO, Fla. – Georgia Tech’s No. 15 Carol Lee kept momentum rolling in the NCAA Championships round of 32 on Tuesday, pocketing a straight-set victory for the second consecutive day. The individual NCAA Championships are being played at the USTA National Campus.
Taking on Tennessee’s No. 21 Elza Tomase, the opponents traded the first two games of the opening set to remain on serve at 1-all before Lee pocketed the next three games for a 4-1 advantage. Back-to-back breaks left Lee with a 5-2 lead as the Yellow Jacket served out the first set, 6-2.
Lee and Tomase went back-and-forth in the early going of the second set, resulting in a 2-2 standstill. But Lee earned a break to take a 3-2 edge and held serve for a 4-2 advantage. Tomase won the next game, but Lee overpowered the Lady Volunteer, winning the final two games to advance to the round of 16.
With Tuesday’s victory, Lee clinched her first-ever appearance in the round of 16 and will return to action on Wednesday. She becomes the first Yellow Jacket to advance to the round of 16 since Paige Hourigan in 2018.
On Wednesday, Lee will face No. 23 Carolyn Ansari (Auburn).
