Jordan, Moss Lead Georgia Tech on Second Day of NCAA East Region Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Alphonso Jordan placed second in the men’s triple jump to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams on the second day of the NCAA East Region Championships at the Mike Long Track on the Florida State University campus.

Jordan finished with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 9 ½ inches for a second-place finish in the triple jump to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. Senior James Lemons II finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 51 feet, 9 ¾ inches.

The men’s team finished the regional with 20 points and in ninth place. The women’s squad led by senior Shantia Moss, who earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finished 11th in the region with 14 points. Moss finished the hurdles final with a time of 13.09.

Junior Kimery Hern placed sixth in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 191 feet, 7 inches to earn three points for the Yellow Jackets. Junior Alana Clooten finished seventh with a personal-best mark of 184 feet, 9 inches.

Senior Jenny Sims crossed the line with a time of 4:31.32 in the women’s 1500-meter run final for a 10th-place finish.

In the women’s 200-meter dash final, junior Jacqua Williams placed sixth with a time of 23.64. She missed an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship by .007 seconds.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle placed 11th in the men’s discus with a mark of 167 feet, 6 inches.

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team of Kayla McKeirnan, Amanda Montgomery, Jenae Anderson and Tiffany Grant finished 19th with a time of 3:46.71.

The Jackets who have qualified will compete at the NCAA Championships on June 11-14 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
