Jackets Upended Late by Badgers, 6-3

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball fell to Wisconsin, 6-3, on a windy Friday evening at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets (3-3) blasted three solo shots for the second straight game, coming back from down two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, but three more runs in the top of the seventh powered the Badgers (1-4) to victory.

Making the most of their four hits, Tech’s three solo home runs belonged to junior designated player Sara Beth Allen, senior catcher Emma Kauf and sophomore second baseman Grace Connelly. Allen and Connelly each laced their first round trippers of the season and second of their careers, while Kauf added her second of the year in back-to-back games and 24th overall in her time on The Flats.

Wisconsin climbed aboard first, swatting a solo shot over dead center in the top of the third. Georgia Tech responded an inning later as Allen blasted an opposite field solo bomb in the bottom of the fourth.

With both squads locked at 1-1 heading into the fifth, Wisconsin inched back ahead. The Badgers moved runners in scoring position, knocking a sacrifice fly and RBI single in succession to plate two more runs for a 3-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets answered the bell in the bottom of the sixth, using two more solo shots courtesy of Kauf and Connelly to knot things up at 3-3.

Wisconsin dealt its knockout blow in the top of the seventh, putting up a three spot with two more home runs before retiring the side in the bottom half for a 6-3 win.

Of the four Jackets spending time in the circle, senior hurler Blake Neleman saw the most action with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings, surrendering three runs. Fellow senior right hander Chandler Dennis (1-2) received the loss.
