NEW YORK (AP) – Chris Gaston scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as Fordham beat Georgia Tech 72-66 on Thursday night at Rose Hill Gym, which hosted an Atlantic Coast Conference team for only the third time in its history.
Jason Morris led Georgia Tech with 17 points and Brandon Reed chipped in with 16.
Georgia Tech (7-6) trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but rallied to cut the Fordham lead to three, 56-53, with 6:40 left to play behind Daniel Miller’s three-point play. But Brandon Frazier sparked a 9-3 run to put the Rams ahead 65-56 with 3:49 remaining.
Frazier scored five points during the run and Gaston knocked down two free throws. Frazier finished with a season-high 19 points and six assists for the Rams.
Tech had one more rally left as Kammeon Holsey and Reed each scored twice. Reed drained a long three to get the Jackets within 67-66 with 31 seconds left. After Kevin Bristol sank one of two free throws to make it 68-66 with 29 seconds left, Tech had a chance to tie or take the lead. Reed passed up an open three to drive the paint, and his runner caromed off the iron.
The Rams went 4-for-4 from the free throw line from there to ice the game.
Despite outshooting Fordham (6-6) from the field 42.4 percent (25 of 59) to 37.9 percent (22 of 58), the Yellow Jackets only made 6 of 14 free throws and sent the Rams to the line 34 times.
Fordham converted 22 of those attempts.
