Georgia Tech hosted its final preseason tune-up last week against Clayton State in an exhibition contest. Paced by fifth-year transfer Cameron Swartz and freshman Kara Dunn in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively, the Yellow Jackets collected a 69-62 win. Junior Eylia Love led the Jackets on the glass, securing a team-high 12 rebounds. Tech shot 42.6 percent for the game.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last season, earning the No. 9 seed. Tech made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Yellow Jackets made six-straight appearances from 2007-2012. The Jackets capped the season with a 20-11 overall record and 11-7 Atlantic Coast Conference mark.
Georgia State, led by fifth-year head coach Gene Hill, finished last season at 10-16 overall and went 4-9 in Sun Belt action. The Panthers got their season underway with a commanding 114-31 victory over Agnes Scott on opening night, Nov. 7. Georgia State saw eight-of-nine players reach double figures in the outing, paced by 17 points from Zay Dyer and Deasia Merrill.
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series against Georgia State, 29-11, and has taken 18 consecutive meetings. The crosstown rivals last met in 2020 in McCamish Pavilion with the Yellow Jackets taking a 62-38 triumph.
Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
