Jackets Post Successful Day at ITA Southeast Regionals

UPDATED DRAWS | DOUBLES CONSOLATION DRAWS

THE FLATS – On the first day of main draw action, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team collected six wins between main draw singles and doubles action. Both Kenya Jones and Dalila Said went undefeated on the day, posting a 3-0 mark.

Doubles started the morning as Jones and Said took the court at 9 a.m. The tandem cruised through their round of 32 match, downing North Florida’s Montano/Paula, 8-0. Jeanette Lin and Victoria Flores got off to a slow start, falling behind 5-2 to Georgia’s Gonzalez/Coppoc. But the Yellow Jackets slowly chipped away at their deficit, climbing back to 6-4. The pair broke Georgia to move to 7-6, but the Lady Bulldogs sealed the match with an 8-6 win.

The Jackets collected three wins in the round of 64 as Said pocketed her second match of the day, defeating Mila Hartig (Georgia Southern) in straight sets. The freshman cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 decision to advance to the round of 32, while teammate Nadia Gizdova collected a hard-fought win over Katie Sidor (Mercer), 1-6, 6-2,6-3. Jones also remained undefeated on the day when she bypassed Constanza Gorches (UNF) in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Tech had a pair of fall in the round of 64, but will return for consolation action on Saturday. Valeriya Deminova battled UCF’s Natilia Serrano, but fell, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), while Flores dropped a three-set battle, 1-6,6-2,2-6 to Katie Kubicz of Florida.

Jones and Said closed out the day going undefeated as Jones picked up a 6-4, 6-0 rout over Marie Mottet (Mercer), while Said rebounded after dropping the first set to claim a three-set win over Florida’s Tsveta Dimitrova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 32. Gizdova fell in the round of 32 to Marta Gonzalez (UGA), 6-4, 6-1.

Action resumes on Saturday with two rounds of doubles and the round of 16 singles. Action will begin at 9 a.m. Consolation play will also begin on Saturday.
