Jackets Mash Six Home Runs to Rout USC Upstate

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball was red-hot offensively in its first of five-straight home games, defeating USC Upstate 27-4 on Tuesday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (19-11) scored 12 runs in the eighth inning, sending 18 batters to the plate and tying the school record for most base hits in a single inning with 10 (last vs. Virginia Tech on May 14, 2005). The 12-run eighth was the most for Georgia Tech since the fifth inning against Duke (12) on May 18, 2018.

Overall at the plate, Jake DeLeo led all Jackets with a 5-for-6 day, hitting a triple and a home run for five RBI. Kevin Parada also had a double and a homer for three RBI while Drew Compton drew an RBI walk and hit a two-run homer as well. Tim Borden II added in the fourth home run of the day for Georgia Tech, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI. Also hitting home runs on the night was Nicholas Romano and John Anderson.

Chandler Simpson made his return to the lineup, playing second base and hitting leadoff for Tech. He finished 4-for-5 with two RBI, two walks and two stolen bases on the night.

On the mound, the Jackets used eight pitchers. Starter RHP John Medich (2-1) allowed just one run on one hit in the first two innings, striking out two. LHP Sam Crawford and LHP Camron Hill both had shutout relief appearances with Crawford going two innings and Hill going one.

The Spartans (18-11) were led by Noah Sullivan, who went 2-for-2 with two walks. Starter RHP Will Lozinak (0-1) received the loss, getting tagged for eight runs on six hits in just 0.2 innings of work.

The Yellow Jackets remain home a part of this homestand, hosting Florida State on April 8-10. First pitches are set for 6 p.m., 4 p.m. and 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra with Sunday’s finale broadcast nationally on ACC Network.

  • Georgia Tech’s 10 hits in the eighth inning tied the school record for most hits in a single inning – six times, last vs. Virginia Tech on May 14, 2005 (1st and 2nd);
  • Georgia Tech’s 27 runs is its most since it scored won 28-3 against Georgia State on April 12, 1994;
  • Georgia Tech’s 12 runs in the eighth were the most in a single inning since the fifth inning against Duke on May 18, 2018;
  • Georgia Tech’s 23 hits were the most since it recorded 27 against Savannah State on May 10, 2016;
  • Georgia Tech’s six home runs were the most since it had seven against Presbyterian on May 3, 2009;
  • Jake DeLeo’s five-hit game is his second of his career (prev. five hits at Virginia Tech on April 18, 2021).
