Jackets Fall at Vanderbilt in NCAA Second Round

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 41 Georgia Tech women’s tennis team capped its season in the NCAA Tournament second round on Saturday, falling at No. 8 Vanderbilt, 4-0. The Yellow Jackets finished the season at 13-13 overall.

“I’m proud of the fight and effort today by our team,” commented head coach Rodney Harmon. “Vanderbilt has a great team and I thought we competed as hard as we could. I’m proud of our effort this weekend.”

DOUBLES ACTION: With wins on courts two and three, Vanderbilt took the doubles point to carry a 1-0 lead into singles action. Kenya Jones and Nadia Gizdova stood tied at 2-all on court three with Christina Rosca and Amanda Meyer, but the Commodores won the next four points to take the decision, 6-2. The point was clinched from the two seed despite Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen holding a 5-3 lead. Fernanda Contreras and Georgia Drummy claimed the next four games to rally and clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.

SINGLES ACTION:
The Commodores pocketed the first three singles matches to clinch the win, 4-0. On court one, No. 9 Jones kept it close against No. 64 Georgia Drummy, but fell 6-4, 3-3, default. No. 6 Contreras cushioned Vanderbilt’s lead from the two seed, defeating Otsuka in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Minutes later, the Commodores clinched the match on court three as No. 18 Rosca topped Valeriya Deminova, 6-3, 6-1.

Play was suspended after Vanderbilt clinched the match. Gizdova led over Summer Dvorak on court six. The Yellow Jacket erased an early deficit, 3-1, in the first set to claim a 7-5 opener. Gizdova won the first game of the second set before play was suspended. On court five, Victoria Flores led in a first set tiebreak over Carolyn Campana, 6-4, but was suspended with the win.
