Jackets Fall 11-5 to North Carolina

Box Score (.pdf)

DURHAM, N.C. – Georgia Tech baseball made a furious comeback attempt with five runs in the late innings, but it wouldn’t be enough in the 11-5 loss to North Carolina on Tuesday afternoon in the ACC Tournament at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Yellow Jackets (30-26) recorded 12 hits on the day, but just four with runners in scoring position, as they were unable to match the Tar Heels (34-21), who put up three crooked numbers on the day in some clutch moments, hitting .462 with RISP.

Tech was led by five multi-hit players on the day with Kristian Campbell, Jake DeLeo, Angelo Dispigna, Jack Rubenstein and Jadyn Jackson registering two hits each. John Giesler hit a massive home run over the bull in left field in sixth, while DeLeo hit a two-RBI double off the wall in the seventh and drove in a third run in the ninth.

RHP starter Ben King (6-2) had three runs cross against him in 3.0 innings before RHP Luke Schmolke went 2.2 innings with three runs scoring in the sixth. RHP Terry Busse then came in to go 1.2 innings, having three runs score against him in the eighth. LHP Dalton Smith pitched the final two outs.

North Carolina was led by Patrick Alvarez, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI. RHP Ben Peterson (3-0) received the win, having two runs score on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Georgia Tech will turn around and play Game 2 in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday, May 24. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
