Jackets Edged Late by No. 13 Blue Devils

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-5, 0-3 ACC) was upended late by No. 13 Duke (16-3, 3-0 ACC), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field. In a pitcher’s duel that began with six scoreless innings, the Blue Devils rallied scoring three runs in the top of the seventh as the Jackets mustered one run in the bottom of the final frame.

Junior right-hander Blake Neleman pitched a solid game, shutting out Duke through six with six strikeouts before the late push. Junior infielder Caroline Davis had the most impactful moment at the dish on the day for Tech as she stepped in with a pinch hit, solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

The bats for both squads were mostly kept quiet on the day as only four hits were allowed through the first six innings. The Blue Devils then broke the seal in the seventh with an RBI double and two-run bomb shortly after. Davis kept the Jackets alive in the bottom of the seventh with her two-out solo shot, but Duke managed to hang on for the 3-1 win to close the series.

Game Notes

  • Davis’ pinch hit, two-out solo dinger marked the fourth time she’s gone yard this season and the fifth time in her career.
  • Freshman outfielder Ella Edgmon picked up a single from the nine hole to bat .500 on the day.
  • Neleman has tossed six or more strikeouts in 10 of her 11 starts as she’s now 9-3 on the season.
