BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 20 Georgia Tech baseball was unable to keep the momentum going on Saturday when it fell 7-0 to No. 12 Virginia Tech at English Field.
The Yellow Jackets (16-14, 13-10 ACC) were held to just four hits on the night – two of which came from Tres Gonzalez – while the Hokies (20-11, 15-8 ACC) pieced together 10 hits for seven runs. Justyn-Henry Malloy’s single and Stephen Reid’s double were GT’s other hits for the day.
On the mound, LHP Sam Crawford (2-4) received the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits in five innings. RHP Hugh Chapman and RHP Austin Wilhite both pitched in relief to close.
Virginia Tech offensively had three multi-hit performances, which were led by Cade Swisher’s 3-for-3, four-RBI effort. On the mound, RHP Anthony Simonelli (4-0) allowed just two hits in his six innings before RHP Graham Firoved pitched a two-hit, three-inning save.
The rubber match is set now for Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
