TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Christy Striplin defeated Alabama’s Sofia Ayala, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to clinch match victory for Georgia Tech (3-1), as the Yellow Jackets defeated the University of Alabama (1-4), 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center at Alabama.
With Tech leading 3-2 in the match, Striplin made quick work of Ayala to clinch the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets’ third match victory of the season, and Whitney McCray finished off the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Shelley Godwin at the No. 5 slot for the final point.
The Jackets earned the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 slots to begin the afternoon. No. 42 Kelly Anderson and McCray earned an 8-2 victory in the No. 2 slot and Alison Silverio teamed with Tarryn Rudman to clinch the point at No. 3 with another 8-2 victory.
In a battle of two of the top-25 tandems in the nation, 15th-ranked Ashley Bentley and Robin Stephenson bested Tech’s No. 26 Kristi Miller and Lyndsay Shosho, 8-6 to avoid a doubles sweep by the Yellow Jackets.
In singles action, Tech’s 35th-ranked Anderson, playing at the No. 4 position, gave Tech a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win, and Silverio pushed the score to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 slot.
The Tide pulled within one point at 3-2 when 13th-ranked Stephenson won a 7-5, 6-1 match against the 7th-ranked Miller in the top singles slot and Bentley came back after splitting the first two sets with Shosho to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
The Yellow Jackets will now travel straight to Auburn to face the Tigers Saturday at 2 p.m. EST.
