Jackets Continue Play in Freeman Memorial Championships

ATLANTA – Whitney McCray and Amanda McDowell posted a back draw doubles win and a trio of Yellow Jackets notched singles victories on the second day of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships, which are being contested at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on UNLV’s campus in Las Vegas, Nev.

McCray and McDowell stopped UNLV’s doubles tandem of Katy Williams and Anna Maskaljun, 8-5, in the second round of consolation play, while Georgia Tech’s other doubles team of Kristi Miller and Kirsten Flower, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, dropped their main draw match to North Carolina’s talented duo of Catrina Tsang and Austin Smith, 8-5.

McCray, the No. 4 seed in the singles draw and the only Yellow Jacket to advance through the first two rounds of the main draw, dropped a three-set match to Stanford’s Whitney Deason, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. Miller, Flower and McDowell all won singles matches that were added late, with Miller stopping Arizona State’s Nadia Abdala, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, McDowell downing Florida’s Alexander, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and Flower dropping Oregon’s Celine Rolly, 7-5, 6-0.

The tournament will conclude Sunday with the doubles final beginning at 10 a.m.
