THE FLATS – Georgia Tech men’s tennis celebrated twice on Sunday. Once for defeating Boston College in a quick, 4-0, manner to finish the regular season on a high note, and once for honoring its three seniors –Michael Kay, Elijah Melendez and Daniel Yun – as part of Senior Day festivities.
The Yellow Jackets’ victory pushed them to a 6-16 finish on the year and 2-10 in ACC, while the Eagles fell to 6-15 overall and 1-11 in conference.
The 17th-ranked doubles team of Carlos Divar and Kay continued their fine season by downing Derek Austin and Sean Mullins, 6-3, before Phillip Gresk and Andrew Li defeated Conor Mullins and Kent Mukai, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point. Melendez and Chris Yun led 4-3 over Max Palmer and Chris Grasel, 4-3, when the match was called.
No. 61 Divar led off the singles effort for Tech, downing Austin in straights sets, 6-4, 6-2. Li then battled to take the No. 6 position over Conor Mullins, 6-1, 7-5. Gresk then clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets in a three-set court 3. Facing off against Max Palmer, Gresk dropped a heartbreaking first set 7-5 before he was able to battle back and take the match 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Kay was also staring at a match point when the match was called, up 6-4, 5-4 over Chris Grasel. Senior Melendez was tied at one set apiece with Mukai while Chris Yun was up a set over Sean Mullins at the No. 5.
Georgia Tech will now ready for the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C. Action begins April 25. Full details and opponents will be released by the conference in the coming days.
