Guillermo Gomez Named Mideast ITA Rookie Player of the Year

May 13, 2008

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez was named the Mideast ITA Rookie of the Year as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the eight region winners. Regional award winners are finalists for the national award which will be announced on May 20.

“Guillermo had an outstanding freshman year and he is very deserving of earning Region ITA Rookie of the Year,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “It is a nice addition to his Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year award. He did not get these awards by showing up to Georgia Tech and just playing hard in matches; he earned them because he worked long and hard the old fashioned way. He has been a good example all year and represented Georgia Tech well in all areas of his life. We are proud of him and excited about his future at Georgia Tech.”

The native from Alicante, Spain, became the first Yellow Jacket to garner the league’s top rookie accolade since Paul Stevens was tabbed the 1991 ITA Region Rookie of the Year. Gomez registered identical 7-4 ledgers in both singles and doubles action during league play in 2008. His 27 overall singles victories place him ninth all-time in Georgia Tech history.
