THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech divers opened NCAA Zone Diving on Monday, and the Jackets placed three participants in the finals. However, Tech did not have a diver qualify for NCAAs.
“In the 1-meter event, Shannon (Lumbra) struggled in the prelims, but made it into the final,” diving coach John Ames said. “She was solid in the finals and moved up three places. I was proud of her comeback. Brad (Homza) struggled today on 3m, but Matt (Casillas) was great in the prelim, finishing 11th. We are all so proud of how he has come back from his health issues earlier in the year. I was also very proud of Omar (Eteiba) for making the 3m final.”
The day began with the women’s 1-meter, as Shannon Lumbra finished 16th in the prelims with a score of 262.65 and advanced to the finals, while Andrea Demick finished 27th with a score of 239.90. With prelim scores carrying over to the finals, Lumbra finished 13th in the finals with a total score of 542.10.
In the men’s 3-meter, Matt Casillas and Omar Eteiba made it to the finals, finishing 16th (648.55) and 18th (617.45), respectively. Brad Homza, the reigning ACC platform champion, and Nolan Mallet missed out on the finals.
“I’m very proud of the way our divers performed today,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “I thought they competed very well, and we’re all looking forward to watching these athletes continue to perform at a high level tomorrow.”

For the second time in program history, Georgia Tech and the McAuley Aquatic Center will serve as the host site for the 2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. The Women’s Championships will be held March 16-19, followed by the Men’s Championships March 23-26. Georgia Tech previously hosted the 2006 NCAA Championships and the CRC was also the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics swimming and diving competitions.
