AUBURN, Ala. – Led by a runner-up finish from senior Katie Griffin, the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team placed third at Saturday’s Auburn Invitational at the Indian Pines Golf Course. The men’s team, led by a strong race from senior Brendon Mahoney, finished 16th.
The women tallied 97 points, while the men posted 368.
Griffin placed second in the 235-runner field with a season-best 5K time of 16:53.56. She has finished first or second overall in three of her four races this season.
Freshman Carly Matthews continued her impressive rookie season by finishing 16th (17:33.94). Seniors Eboni Crosby and Amy Dock finished 24th and 25th, respectively, while freshman Catherine Spoth placed 38th to close out the scoring for the Jackets.
On the men’s side, Mahoney finished 14th in his first race of the season. His 8K time of 24:36.82 ranks as the Jackets best effort this season. Freshmen took the next two spots for Tech, as Rob Kuhn placed 64th and Clark Rivers took 101st. Senior Jimmy DeYonker (109th) and sophomore Gaben Moore (122nd) rounded out the scoring for the Jackets. There were 253 runners in the men’s race.
SMU won the men’s meet with 52 points, while Virginia Tech took the women’s title with 64 points. There were 30 teams competing in both the men’s and women’s races.
The Jackets return to action Saturday, November 2, as Tech hosts the ACC Championships at the Georgia Regional Hospital Cross Country Course.
