KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis sophomore Guillermo Gomez captured the title at the 2009 Key Biscayne Invitational with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Michigan’s Jason Jung Sunday in Key Biscayne, Fla. The Yellow Jackets won six of the nine singles matches against members of the 16th-ranked Wolverines on the final day of the three-day individual tournament.
“This team has a lot of fighters and our guys really found themselves in this weekend.” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “The most important thing we learned is that we now have a clear direction on what we need to work on in practice.”
Gomez, the 14th-ranked singles player in the nation, accumulated the most combined wins in singles (3-0) and doubles (2-1) matches of any other player in the tournament. The Jackets as a team posted a singles record of 14-9 and a doubles record of 8-4 against opponents from No. 2 Texas, No. 16 Michigan and No. 23 Alabama over the weekend.
Sophomores Eliot Potvin, Miguel Muguruza and Doug Kenny, along with freshman Dusan Miljevic all picked up straight-set wins over the Maize and Blue’s Mike Srocynsky, Peter Aarts, Mike DePietro and George Navas, respectively. Potvin was a two-time victor on the day as he also won an eight-game pro-set match, 8-5, over DePietro.
Potvin’s earlier match came as a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Srocynski, while Muguruza and Kenny won 6-3, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-4.
Miljevic had a strong weekend of his own, posting a 3-1 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record including an eight-game pro-set victory on Friday. His Sunday match came as a 6-3, 6-0 decision over the Michigan captain.
“This weekend we learned that we can beat teams ranked in the top-20 and we solidified that a couple of times in the last few days,” Thorne added. “I am proud of the team and we are excited to start the season.”
Tech will begin dual-match play Sunday, Jan. 18, as it hosts USC-Upstate at 9 a.m. and Wofford at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
