Jan. 12, 2009

ATLANTA – Men’s tennis sophomore Guillermo Gomez along with track and field’s Jerome Miller and Bailey Wagner have been named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, Jan. 12, 2009.

Gomez captured the title at the 2009 Key Biscayne Invitational with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Michigan’s Jason Jung. The Alicante, Spain native, accumulated the most combined wins in singles (3-0) and doubles (2-1) matches of any other player in the tournament. Gomez is currently the 14th-ranked singles player in the nation.

Miller broke the Georgia Tech Indoor high jump record with a height of 7 feet, 4 1/4 inches for a first-place finish at the Clemson Invitational Saturday. The senior from Stafford, Va. became an NCAA Automatic qualifier in just his first meet of the 2009 Indoor season. Miller set the previous record at 7 feet, 3 inches even in the 2007 season. His jump on Saturday was 4 inches higher than the second-place finisher.

In the first meet of her collegiate-career, Wagner took first-place in the women’s shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 10 1/4 inches at the Clemson Invitational Saturday. The Lake Villa, Ill. native’s toss was the second longest ever at an indoor meet in school history. Wagner won the event by a whole two inches.
