Gomez Earns Bid to NCAA Individual Tennis Championships

May 16, 2008

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez was selected to the NCAA Individual Tennis Championships, announced the NCAA Friday. Gomez was originally selected as the first alternate for this season’s championship event.

Gomez, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, is the first Yellow Jacket freshman to earn a bid into the NCAA Individual tournament since current women’s head coach Bryan Shelton represented the Jackets in the 1985 tournament. Current teammate David North was selected last season into the tournament, dropping his opening round match to Devin Mullings of Ohio State, 3-6, 6-1. 6-4.

“The NCAA berth for Guillermo is a great way to top off a very productive freshman year,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He worked hard to get where he is and fortunately he is receiving the benefits of that work. He deserves to be there and now we work towards being productive once we get to Tulsa.”

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 21-26 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 16-20). The University of Tulsa will serve as host.
