Gomez Defeated At Indoor Nationals, Jackets Nab Eight Wins At Bulldog Scramble

Nov. 7, 2008

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Georgia Tech sophomore Guillermo Gomez came up short at the ITA Indoor National Championships Friday, falling to the nation’s fifth-ranked player Robert Farah of Southern Cal in the round of 16 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. In other play, the Yellow Jackets picked up eight wins at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga.

A day after picking up a win in his first ever match at the ITA Nationals, Gomez was unable to get past USC’s Farah, falling in straight-sets 6-2, 6-2. The sophomore from Alicante, Spain ended his fall winning-streak at nine matches.

Playing in the Bulldog Scramble, eight other Jackets recorded seven singles wins and one doubles win on the day. Freshman Kevin King notched two singles wins for Tech, taking down Georgia’s Drake Bernstein 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 before dropping Ivan Machado of South Carolina 6-1, 6-4.

Also picking up a pair of wins was sophomore Doug Kenny and junior Austin Roebuck. Kenny defeated Kentucky’s Patrick Bandy 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6) in the morning before picking up a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over South Carolina’s Joseph Veeder.

Roebuck made quick work of South Carolina teammates Chris Sheehan and Thomas Stoddard, beating Sheehan 7-6 (4), 6-1 and Stoddard 6-4, 6-3 in the session.

Kevin King and sophomore Ryan Smith teamed up for Tech’s lone doubles win, an 8-4 feat over South Carolina’s Pedro Campos and Ivan Machado.

“Overall, I felt there were positives and negatives on the day,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We fought well as a team physically but we need to dig more mentally. Our execution wasn’t as sharp as we needed it to be, and it has to be there when we play the top teams in the country.”

Play continues at the Scramble on Saturday at 10 a.m.
