CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez moved into the round-of-16 with two victories on the second day of the ITA Wilson Mideast Region Championships on the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
Gomez, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, defeated fifth-seeded Roy Sichel of Charlotte, 7-6, 6-0, in his second round match. The two played some long points but Gomez pulled away in the second set. In the third round, Gomez faced Brandon Corace of Virginia Tech. After winning the first set 7-5, Corace withdrew due to a wrist injury, pushing Gomez’s win streak to eight matches.
“Guillermo (Gomez) has played some very good tennis over the past few weeks,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He has picked up where he left off at the Georgia Tech Fall Tournament. It is very impressive to see where he is at as a freshman.”
Senior Scott Blackmon earned a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory in his second round match against Derek Stephens of NC State. Blackmon started slow but picked it up as he got more relaxed. His third round match ended differently as Blackmon dropped the match, 6-2, 6-2, to Nicholas Delgado of Virginia Tech.
Also earning a second round victory was senior David North. Playing in his first singles match since the NCAA Tournament, North defeated Bo Ladyman of Furman, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. In the third round, North won his first set against Rok Bizjak of Clemson but dropped a second set tiebreaker and eventually would lose the match, which lasted close to three hours, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.
“David (North) started very good today but just ran out of steam,” Thorne said. “It was good for him to go out and get to play some good tennis against quality opponents.”
In doubles play, Gomez and North withdrew from their second round match due to exhaustion from long singles matches. The other team standing, Jose and Miguel Muguruza, dropped their second round match in a tiebreaker to Evgeny Slearev and Andrew Veeder of Gardner-Webb, 9-8 (5).
Results from the ITA Wilson Mideast Region Championships will be posted at the end of each day on www.ramblinwreck.com, Georgia Tech’s official athletic website.
