ATLANTA – Nicholas Thompson shot a 74 Saturday and is five shots off the lead, while top-ranked Georgia Tech still trails 36-hole leader Georgia by eight shots at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm golf club in Rocky Face, Ga.
Tech shaved one shot off the Bulldogs’ first-round lead Saturday, posting a team total of 296. Thompson has a 36-hole total of 147 (three over par) and is five strokes behind Luke List of Vanderbilt, who carded a three-under-par 69 Saturday and has a one-shot lead on first-round leader David Denham of Georgia.
Third-ranked Georgia, who posted a 297 score Saturday and leads with an 11-over-par total of 587, has a six-shot advantage on Wake Forest, who produced the best round of the tournament so far at 292, four over par, and has a 36-hole total of 593. Tech is at 595, followed by No. 4 New Mexico at 597, and defending champion Florida at 600.
The final 18 round of the tournament on the 7,010-yard, par 72 layout begins at 8 a.m. Sunday. Tech, Georgia and Wake Forest are paired together with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Senior Chan Song, junior Mike Barbosa and sophomore Kevin Larsen matched Thompson’s 74 Saturday, neither golfer able to help Tech significantly close the gap on the Bulldogs. Larsen, with a two-round total of 150, is tied for 16th place, while Barbosa, at 151, is tied for 29th. Roberto Castro, a sophomore, shot 78 Saturday and is tied with Barbosa and six others. Song, at 152, is tied for 37th place.
