THE FLATS – Redshirt junior Matt Connors racked up 84 yards on 12 carries to lead the Gold team to a 22-10 win over the White squad in the 2013 Georgia Tech Friday Night on the Flats presented by CBC National Bank at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Quarterbacks Justin Thomas and Tim Byerly each scored a rushing touchdown for the Gold team. The Gold out-rushed the White 229 to 157 with 15 more carries. Thomas converted 3-of-7 pass attempts for 38 yards with a long of 18. Synjyn Days led the Gold receiving corp with three catches for 33 yards.
Following the game, head coach Paul Johnson said Connors, “plays hard. Matt has a good attitude and I think he’ll help us.
“We had a productive spring. There are always things you’d like to do better. I think we got a good start for fall,” Johnson added.
Vad Lee led the White team with 62 yards rushing on nine carries and converted 4-of-13 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.
The White team got on the board first when Justin Moore booted a 43-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The 43-yard kick would be a career high for Moore, who converted a 41-yard attempt against Virginia Tech on Nov. 10, 2011, in a Thursday night contest at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The Gold squad scored the first touchdown when Justin Thomas scored on a one-yard keeper after Matt Connors ran the ball inside the five yard line. The White team regained the lead when Vad Lee found Deon Hill on a 17-yard play action touchdown pass to the near sideline, giving the White a 10-6 advantage.
The second half was played with a running clock and the Gold squad capitalized on a White miscue, when Quayshawn Nealy picked up a fumble and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to put the Gold up 15-10. The Gold side added an insurance touchdown when Byerly scampered for an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.
