Georgia Tech's Whitney Haller Named ACC Softball Player of the Week

April 17, 2006

ATLANTA – Freshman Whitney Haller was named as the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Haller earns the honor for the first time this season after leading Georgia Tech (39-14, 10-5 ACC) to a perfect 6-0 record last week.

Haller, a native of Marietta, Ga., smacked two home runs against Furman in a doubleheader and added two more over the weekend against the Eagles to push her ACC leading and single-season conference record total to 21 (2nd most in the NCAA). She also became the Act’s all-time leading RBI hitter for a single-season against the Eagles, ending the weekend with a season total of 66 (2nd in the nation).

Haller picked up her second win of the season in the circle against Boston College, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit in a Tech 12-11 come-from-behind victory in game one of the BC series. On Saturday, with Tech trailing 4-3 in game two, Haller connected on a 2-2 pitch with two outs to give the Jackets a 6-4 lead as Tech went on to defeat the Eagles, 10-4.

The USA Collegiate Softball Player of the Year Finalist finished the week 9-for-20 (.450), with one double, four home runs, 11 runs batted in, four walks and tallied a 1.100 slugging percentage. In the circle, Haller went 1-0, with a 3.71 ERA and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.

The Jackets will host in-state foe Georgia State on Wednesday, April 19, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The games will be played at Glenn Field and can be followed on www.ramblinwreck.com.
