THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman women’s tennis player Megan Kurey has been named ACC Player of the Week the conference announced Tuesday.
It is the first ACC Player of the Week honor for Kurey and for a Yellow Jacket this season. She went 3-1 overall and keyed Georgia Tech’s 4-3 comeback win over No. 16 Florida State on Sunday.
“It is great for Megan to be named ACC Player of the Week this week,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “She has worked extremely hard all year both in practice and off the court. Megan has been playing extremely well in doubles with Kendal Woodard and had a huge singles win against Florida State. She is very deserving of the award.”
Kurey and doubles partner Kendal Woodard improved to 14-4 overall and 10-1 in dual matches with a pair of wins. Against Miami, the duo downed the Canes’ 43rd-ranked pair of Stephanie Wagner and Lina Lileikite 8-5 at No. 1. The Tech side cruised past FSU’s team of Francesca Segarelli and Kristina Schleich 8-3 at the top of the lineup.
Against Florida State’s 72nd-ranked Francesca Segarelli, Kurey rallied from a 6-4 first set loss to win sets two and three, 6-2, 6-1, respectively, at the No. 4 spot and evened the team score in a match Georgia Tech would have to come from behind to win.
Georgia Tech will play its fifth straight home match on Saturday when the Yellow Jackets take on No. 15 Notre Dame at noon at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. It will be the second meeting of the year after the Fighting Irish took a 4-3 decision from the Yellow Jackets at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
