GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second straight week after defeating three fellow nationally ranked opponents in straight sets.
It marks the fifth time in 11 weeks that the sophomore from Jupiter, Fla., has been named the ACC Player of the Week outright or shared the honor. Falconi, who continues to hold the nation’s No.1 ranking, is now 16-1 overall and 4-0 against ACC opponents during the dual-match season. Since suffering only her second loss of the entire year on Feb. 13, Falconi has won 10 straight singles matches.
Falconi opened her week last Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Miami’s No. 7 Laura Vallverdu, her 12th victory over a top 20 opponent since September. Falconi followed up over the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over 68th-ranked Martina Pavelec of Wake Forest (6-1, 6-1) and NC State’s 64th-ranked Sandhya Nagaraj (6-1, 7-5).
Falconi also teamed with Sasha Krupina to defeat the No. 42 doubles team of Nagaraj and Berkeley Brock of NC State, 8-5, on Sunday to help Tech take the deciding doubles point in a 4-3 win over the 26th-ranked Wolfpack.
