ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Matt Figh, Ofer Finkler, Sam Morgan and Jason Howard broke the school record with a NCAA “B’ standard time of 6:34.45 to lead the men’s swimming and diving team at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Wednesday night in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Tech stands sixth with 52 points, while Virginia leads with 72 points after one day of competition.
Figh, a native of Montgomery, Ala., just missed the school record in the 200 free (1:37.70) with a leadoff split time of 1:37.81 in the 800 free relay.
The Cavaliers’ 800 free relay team of Luke Anderson, Stefan Hirniak, Fran Crippen and Michael Raab set a new pool and ACC meet record with a time of 6:28.03 to win the event.
Tech’s 200 medley relay team of Jeremy Raines, Alex Williams, Teemu Kettunen and Ryan Riebesell finished seventh with a season-best time of 1:30.93.
NC State’s relay team of Kevin Velleca, Dan Velez, Kevin Devine and Cullen Jones broke the ACC conference, meet and pool record in the 200 medley with a time of 1:27.46.
The championships will continue in the GTAC on Thursday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m.
