COLUMBUS, Ga. – Alabama’s Stephanie VanBrakle homered in the top of the seventh inning and drove in two runs to lead the seventh-ranked Crimson Tide (10-2) past Georgia Tech (6-4), 3-2, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday at the South Commons Complex.
Sophomore Whitney Humphreys (4-1) fell for the first time this season, working 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one run and struck out one. Freshman Lacey Richardson threw the first 4.2 innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs.
Senior shortstop Christine Sheridan tripled to right-center field and scored on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Savannah Brown to give Tech an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
UA’s Stephanie Van Brakle doubled down the right field line to drive in the Crimson Tide’s first run of the game to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Allison Moore put the Crimson Tide ahead, 2-1, with a two-out pinch hit single through the left side.
Sophomore second baseman Aileen Morales tied the game for the Yellow Jackets in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a RBI double to center field as Tech and Alabama were knotted at 2-2.
VanBrakle hit a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh inning to provide Alabama with the winning run as Tech fell by a final of 3-2.
Tech scored two runs, on five hits and had no errors, while the Crimson Tide scored three runs, on nine hits and had no errors.
