Georgia Tech To Play Air Force In AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl

Dec. 5, 2010

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech accepted an invitation from the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl to play Air Force Dec. 27 in Shreveport, La. (5 p.m. ET/ESPN2).

The Yellow Jackets, 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the ACC, are making their 14th consecutive bowl game appearance, which ties for the fourth-longest active streak in the FBS. Tech, which will appear in its 39th bowl game overall, will be making its first appearance in the Independence Bowl.

“We appreciate the invitation to play in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl and we are excited to have our team and fans in Shreveport for what is one of the more intriguing bowl match-ups,” athletic director Dan Radakovich said. “The AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl and the city of Shreveport have a great reputation for hosting this long-standing post-season event.”

Air Force, making its third Independence Bowl appearance, finished the regular season 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons won their final three games by a combined score of 125-65.

The December 27th game has several interesting storylines:

Georgia Tech (327.0 yards per game) and Air Force (317.9 ypg)rank one-two nationally in rushing offense. Yellow Jacket juniorA-back Roddy Jones’ younger brother, Darius, plays for Air Force. Techneeds a victory to extend its streak of consecutive winning seasonsto 14 and to snap a five-game bowl losing streak. Yellow Jackethead coach Paul Johnson is familiar with Air Force after coaching sixseasons (2002-07) at the U.S. Naval Academy. After losing to theFalcons in 2002, Johnson’s Midshipmen beat Air Force fiveconsecutive seasons.

“Our football team should be excited about this opportunity to play against a very talented, well-coached team like the Air Force Academy,” Johnson said. “It will certainly be a challenge for our football team, but it’s also a chance to end the season on a positive note as we head into 2011. I know that our senior class would like to conclude their careers with a win in a bowl game.”
