THE FLATS – Stewart Cink and Chesson Hadley compete in the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in Korea, head home Five other former Jackets resume action this weekend as PGA Tour returns to the United States … This and more in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Report.
It was a slow week for former Yellow Jackets in pro golf, with only Stewart Cink (T-73) and Chesson Hadley (T-73) in action last weekend at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in South Korea. Both players earned money on the limited-field, no-cut event, and head back home while the WGC-HSBC Champions event is held in Shanghai, China and the PGA Tour returns stateside for the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Anders Albertson, Roberto Castro, Seth Reeves, Cameron Tringale and Richy Werenski, all of whom last played in the season-opening Safeway Open in early October, are committed to play in the Sanderson Farms event, while Troy Matteson is currently listed as an alternate.
Web.com Tour: Four former Yellow Jackets have advanced to the second stage of Web.com Tour qualifying school in the past two weeks. Vincent Whaley and Chris Petefish advanced out of the first stage qualifying on Oct. 9-12 at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C., while J.T. Griffin, who earned more than $20,000 in five late starts on the Web.com Tour this summer, and Paul Haley made it through the first stage of qualifying at Highland Oaks Golf Club in Dothan, Ala.
Second stage events take place Nov. 6-9 in four locations, with one other Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The Q-school finals set for Dec. 6-9 in Chandler, Ariz.
PGA Tour Champions: Larry Mize tied for 49th at last weekend’s Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first stage of the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs, not high enough to advance to this week’s second stage, the Invesco QQQ Championship. The Schwab Cup playoffs comprise three events, culminating in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Nov. 8-11 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Elsewhere: Former Georgia Tech star and 1994 ACC Champiom Mikko Rantanen recently won the Speedgolf World Championship at Turning Stone Result in New York state. Rantanen made Speedgold World Championship history by shooting under par for the first time. He shot 71 (-1) in 55:30 minutes on a pretty long course (running distance 5.5 miles).
