THE FLATS – Thaddeus Young regains stride, scores 12th-straight double-figure game … Derrick Favors records double-double in rout of Golden State … Jarrett Jack continues to run Knicks offense with efficiency, makes commitment to Knicks in free agency … Stephon Marbury announces retirement to come on Feb. 11 after 13-year NBA Career … All of this and more can be found in this week’s Georgia Tech #ProJackets Basketball Report.
Leading the Jazz to three-straight wins, Derrick Favors continues to average one rebound shy of a double-double. Favors peaked on Tuesday when he poured in 18 points (on 9-of-11 shooting) and grabbed 10 rebounds en route to a 129-99 rout of the Golden State Warriors … prior to that, he had 10/9 and 8/10 efforts against Toronto and Detroit, respectively. Enjoying himself more recently has contributed to his success, saying, “I’ve just cleared my mind, and not I’m having a lot more fun.”
After a spurt of playing time and production came for Marcus Georges-Hunt, he’s slowly dropped back out of the rotation. Part of the normal ebb and flow of the Timberwolves’ tight rotation, went from 29 minutes last week, down to four minutes against Atlanta. Minnesota is in a slight skid, currently, having dropped four of its last five games to Portland, Golden State, Atlanta and Toronto. The Wolves retake the court on Thursday, Feb. 1 as they host Milwaukee at 8 p.m.
With the Knicks continuing to search for answers, having lost three of their last five, the consistent production of Jarrett Jack has kept them in the headlines. Becoming an interesting asset on the free agency market by efficiently running the offense, Jack has already addressed his loyalty to New York, saying he “would like to finish what [he] started.” The Knicks will have a chance to get back on track when they head to Milwaukee on Friday, Feb. 2.
After Iman Shumpert returned from injury for six minutes in the 102-114 loss to San Antonio on Jan. 23, he’s returned to the bench for the last four games, having yet to play again. Shumpert injured his knee earlier in the season and ultimately required surgery.
After a 2-1 week where the Pacers were able to rest, Thaddeus Young and Co. rattled off three of their next four with only a loss to Cleveland. Young continues to stuff the stat sheet with 20 points and six rebounds against Orlando and 16 points, four rebounds and four assists against Charlotte. After Young’s hot start to the season and then skid, it appears the forward has turned it around, scoring in double figures in 12-straight games with an added benefit of 1.5 steals and 5.9 rebounds during the stretch. The Pacers will try to continue the streak when they head to Charlotte on Friday, Feb. 2 with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
Stephon Marbury announced that he would be ending his career on Feb. 11 in China at the age of 41. During his 13-year NBA career, Marbury averaged 19.3 points, 7.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds with the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.
