Senior Marko Rajevac won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as the No. 29 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team began the 2006 season on a winning note, defeating Furman, 7-0. With the win, the Yellow Jackets are 1-0 and improve to 8-1 in season openers under head coacdh Kenny Thorne. The Paladins drop to 1-5.
The Yellow Jackets captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Georgia Tech opened the match with a win at No. 1 as Rajevac and David North combined to defeat Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarchalk, 8-2. Soon after, Furman tied the score at 1-1 as Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook teamed to defeat Jordan Delass and George Gvelesiani, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The Jackets then claimed the doubles point when Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath paired together to beat Scott Kahler and Will Kiefer, 8-4.
Georgia Tech then took a 2-0 lead as the Yellow Jackets won at No. 3 singles as North defeated Maarchalk, 6-4, 6-3. Tech then increased its lead to 3-0 as Rajevac came from behind to beat Pauluhn, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Yellow Jackets then clinched the match at No. 2 singles as Rath held on to defeat Andy Juc, 7-5, 6-4.
In the other singles matches, Delass won at No. 4 singles to Ladyman, 7-6 (4), 6-0 while Blackmon posted a straight set (6-3, 6-4) win over Daniel Knause and Gvelesiani defeated Crook in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (4).
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday when they take on No. 35 Middle Tennessee State (2-1) at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
