Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Falls To Florida State In ACC Quarters, 4-3

April 18, 2003

RALEIGH – The sixth-seeded Georgia Tech men’s tennis team received singles wins from Scott Schnugg, Joao Menano and Marko Rajevac, but could not rally in singles play and fell by a 4-3 score to third-seeded Florida State in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon in Raleigh. The four-day ACC Championship is being held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (12-9) fell behind in the early going to the Seminoles (14-9) by dropping the doubles point to open the day. Tech’s lone doubles victory of the day came at No. 3, as the team of West Nott and Trevor McLeod were 8-1 winners over Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond. Florida State won the point as it recorded a win at No. 1 from the team of Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd over Scott Schnugg and Roger Anderson by an 8-6 score and at No. 2 from Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub over the Jackets’ tandem of Joao Menano and Marko Rajevac by an 8-5 count.

In singles action, Schnugg was Tech’s first winner, as he used three sets to defeat Romain Jurd at No. 2. Schnugg won the first set by a 6-3 score, but then dropped the second set by a 6-2 count before rallying to win the third set by a 6-1 score. Menano was a winner at No. 3 as he battled for a three-set win over Chris Westerhof. After dropping the first set by a 6-2 score, Menano rallied for a 7-5 win in the second and a 7-6 (4) victory in the third frame.

Rajevac was the final singles winner of the day for the Jackets, as he ended an eight-match winless streak with his straight-set victory over Rodrigo Laub at No. 6 singles. Rajevac was dominant in the match, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.

Georgia Tech will now have to wait to see if it will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced on April 30. Full ACC Tournament results are available at www.theacc.com.
