ATLANTA — The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team concluded a successful opening weekend to the 2001-02 season, as both Stephen Moros and Scott Schnugg reached the finals of their respective flights at the Southern Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., before bowing out in the final round. The four-day event was held at the Dan Magill Tennis Center for the first three days, then moved indoors on Monday to the Lindsay Hopkins Indoor Facility due to inclement weather.
Moros was the first Yellow Jacket to advance to the finals, as he battled three sets to defeat Wake Forest’s David Bere in the semis. The junior dropped the first set by a close 6-7 score, then returned the favor in the second set, winning in a tiebreak to claim a 7-6 set win. Moros then turned on the jets in the third set, winning by a 6-1 score and easing into the finals. In the finals, he faced Tennessee’s Simon Rea, and won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6, Rea then took control and claime the win by a final 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 score. Moros finished the week with a solid 5-1 record.
Sophomore newcomer Schnugg wrapped up his first weekend as a Yellow Jacket in fine fashion as he followed Moros’ lead into the finals of Flight 3. In the semis, he needed three sets to down John Hangstefer, winning the first set easily by a 6-2 score before dropping the second set 4-6. In the third, Schnugg once again took the advantage for a decisive 6-4 third-set win. In the finals, Schnugg battled Florida State’s Romain Jurd for two tough sets before dropping a 7-5, 7-5, straight-set decision. Schnugg also finished the week with a 5-1 record.
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on October 11-14, competing in the ITA All-American Championship in Stone Mountain, Ga.
